In the fourth incarnation of her project ‘Fifty Bees: The Interconnectedness of all Things’, which was exhibited at Black Swan Arts in Frome, Lydia Needle created fifty almost life-size bees to represent fifty of the 275 bee species in the UK. The project was devised to showcase the plight of the British bee. So far, she has created 200 sculptures, but is aiming to complete 275 – one for each of Britain’s bees.
In each show, Lydia sculpts fifty British bees in wool and stitch, and fifty other artists create responses to one bee each.
There have been 4 FIFTY BEES exhibitions which means that Lydia has previously made 200 individual, tiny bee sculptures. Some of those bees are still available to purchase and can be found here: https://www.etsy.com/uk/shop/FIFTYBEES?ref=shop_sugg
